A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in full adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
